A base case is only the starting point. Testing assumptions, development options and combined risks helps reveal what drives mining project value and what could change the investment decision.
A positive net present value does not, on its own, establish that a project is the best use of capital. The investment case depends on the assumptions behind the result, the alternatives available and how the project performs when conditions change.
Looking beyond the base case means asking three practical questions:
- Which assumptions drive value? Test prices, recovery, capital costs, operating costs and timing to identify where changes could alter the decision.
- Could a different development option improve the outcome? Compare scale, phasing, processing routes and infrastructure choices, including their capital requirements and delivery implications.
- What happens when risks combine? A construction delay may defer revenue while increasing costs and funding needs. Testing these effects together reveals exposure that individual sensitivities can miss.
The analysis should identify both opportunities to improve returns and vulnerabilities that need addressing. It should also show which mitigations are worth their cost and what evidence is needed before committing capital.
Minesmart Partners connects project economics with technical, commercial and delivery realities to help clients decide whether to proceed, reshape, defer or stop an investment.
